‘That’s the fact’ – Obinna Nsofor blasts Super Eagles for World Cup failure

Former Super Eagles and Inter Milan striker Obinna Nsofor criticized the present generation of Nigerian players for failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Afrik Foot.

Following a defeat to Ghana on away goals in 2022, the Green and Whites did not seem to learn from that setback and began their 2026 qualifying campaign sluggishly.

Under coaches Jose Peseiro and Finidi George, Nigeria did not secure a victory in their first four matches.

In January 2025, Eric Chelle was appointed, and the Franco‑Malian immediately helped the team secure a play‑off berth. They defeated Gabon in the semi‑finals but were eliminated by DR Congo on penalties.

Obinna unhappy with Super Eagles’ World Cup absence

In the play‑off final, DR Congo beat Jamaica 1‑0, earning a World Cup berth for the first time since 1974.

Having appeared in more than 40 matches for the Green and Whites, Nsofor was unreserved when asked about the team’s failure to qualify. He stated that Nigeria’s absence is due to a lack of quality among the players.

‘If you didn’t qualify for the World Cup it means you are not good to play in the World Cup, that is the truth and we should not paint it, it’s simple as that,’ the former West Ham United player said in an interview with Brila.
