The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has long been hailed as a key bridge builder, strengthening national unity and grassroots development across Nigeria since its inception in 1973.

During a rally in Osogbo on Friday, commemorating the 53rd anniversary of the NYSC, the scheme’s Osun State Coordinator, Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, highlighted the program’s enduring relevance.

“Founded on May 22 1973, the NYSC continues to address national and community challenges by deploying corps members throughout the country,” Kubiangha said. “It has played a critical role in promoting national integration and manpower distribution among states and local government areas.”

He added that corps members can be found serving in every local government across Nigeria, and that the movement of young graduates from one region to another fosters understanding among diverse ethnic groups and enhances service delivery in communities.

“If you observe the flow of manpower from one place to another, you will realise how much the NYSC has benefited the nation,” Kubiangha stated.

The coordinator praised the Osun State Government for its support of corps members’ welfare in the state. He emphasized that, despite challenges, the NYSC remains focused on its mandate of nation‑building and youth development.

“NYSC has not lost focus. The Independent National Electoral Commission, National Orientation Agency, National Population Commission, UNICEF, World Health Organization, and the nation itself cannot do without NYSC,” he said.

Addressing concerns about insecurity in some parts of the country, Kubiangha acknowledged difficulties but noted the scheme’s continued resilience. “I will not say there are no hiccups. There are hiccups, especially from fear of insecurity, but God has been faithful to the scheme,” he added.

Earlier, Olubukola Abiodun, Director of the NYSC South West Area Office 1 in Osogbo, remarked that the scheme has become a lasting institution because Nigerians can reflect on its contributions over the years. He noted that since 1973, the NYSC has impacted several sectors of national life, particularly education and healthcare, while also preparing graduates for the realities of the labour market and future employment opportunities.
