Chaos erupted at the College of Nursing in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area, Imo State, after a female student, Wendy Achumba, was beheaded by suspected assailants.
Achumba, who had completed her midwifery training and was undertaking post‑basic studies, was killed in her apartment on Thursday.
She is reported to be a native of Isiala‑Ngwa in Abia State.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday, announcing that a manhunt has begun for the perpetrators.
“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off‑campus apartment,” Okoye said.
Okoye added that, after receiving the report, the Deputy Police Officer and other operatives quickly visited the scene for an on‑the‑spot assessment. The body was then recovered and taken to the morgue.
He said the investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the attack and to arrest those responsible. One suspect has already been detained and is currently being questioned.
“Consequently, the Command appeals to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to bring those behind the act to justice,” the statement added.
