NUJ Expresses Concern Over Rising Numbers of Okada Riders, Scrap Metal Traders, and Scavengers in Eket, Akwa Ibom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council has expressed concern about the growing number of people arriving in Eket Local Government Area, especially those involved in commercial motorcycle transport, scrap metal trading, and scavenging.

Following a congress held on Thursday in June, the union urged local authorities and security agencies to conduct proper profiling and monitoring of individuals and activities in the area to safeguard public safety and security.

In a communique signed by the council’s Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, and Secretary, Nsikak Esenowo, the NUJ also called on regulatory bodies—including the Nigerian Immigration Service—to strengthen monitoring and verification procedures to ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations.

While acknowledging citizens’ constitutional right to live and work anywhere in the country, the union warned that the recent developments warrant serious attention.

“Congress expressed concern over the increasing influx of individuals into Eket Local Government Area, particularly those engaged in commercial motorcycle transportation, scrap metal trading, and scavenging activities,” the communique stated.

The congress also highlighted the overcrowded condition of correctional facilities, noting the high number of awaiting‑trial inmates at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre.

It urged the judiciary and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system to expedite the trial of pending cases in order to decongest custodial centres and promote the efficient administration of justice.

Regarding environmental sanitation and public health, the congress called on the Eket Local Government Council and relevant environmental agencies to regulate the open processing of cow skin and related activities within the area, citing environmental, public health, and sanitation concerns for affected communities.

The congress also condemned recent harassment of journalists while performing their lawful duties within court premises and reaffirmed that journalists must be allowed to carry out their constitutional role without intimidation, obstruction, or undue interference.

It urged relevant authorities to uphold press freedom and protect media practitioners at all times.
