Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and private security staff employed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch in Awka, Anambra State, clashed at Weather Head Estate over the weekend, creating chaos in the area.
According to sources, the CBN security team, led by the branch’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), confronted NSCDC officers who were on duty in the estate to locate a missing child.
THISDAY reports that the NSCDC were present after receiving a petition concerning a four‑year‑old girl who had been taken from her nursery school in Awka without her guardian’s permission.
The child’s parents are reportedly estranged, and the boy had been left in the father’s care, raising suspicions that the mother may have arranged her removal from school.
NSCDC officers had tracked the girl to a building in the estate and were about to rescue her when a man who identified himself as the CBN CSO in Awka arrived in a sky‑blue Lexus RX 330 SUV. He blocked the NSCDC officers and took the child away.
Our source said, “The incident happened in my estate and generated a huge tension as both sides of the security men challenged each other with guns corked. Many people in the residential estate took to their heels, hiding far away from the incident to avoid being caught up in a shootout.”
When THISDAY reached out to the Head of Media and Tactical Operations in the Anambra State Command of NSCDC, SC Okadigbo Edwin, for a comment, his phone line was not reachable.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Command of NSCDC has written to the Awka branch of the CBN regarding the CSO’s conduct and has called for an investigation, insisting that their operatives were acting on legitimate duty.
