NPFL: Abia Warriors SuspendAmapakabo, Orji As Shorunmu Takes Interim Charge

Abia Warriors have placed head coach Imama Amapakabo and assistant Bethel Orji on suspension, reports Completesports.com.

The suspension is effective immediately, and the coaching staff has been instructed to refrain from any club activities.

Abia Warriors React To Shock Home Defeat

The disciplinary action followed Abia Warriors’ 2‑0 home loss to Kun Khalifat FC on Sunday, a pivotal fixture of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 37.

The measures were outlined in a letter dated May 11, 2026, signed by club chairman John Obuh, who cited “insubordination” as the grounds for the suspension.

The suspension of Amapakabo and his assistant is also linked to incidents that, according to the club, eclipsed the FA Cup semi‑final against Ahudiyannem FC and the NPFL match versus Kun Khalifat FC.

“Despite several directives and advice concerning adjustments to the team’s line‑up in both matches, the coaching crew failed to comply with the instructions, resulting in defeats that brought embarrassment to the club and Abia State,” the club’s management said.

The statement added that both officials will remain suspended until the investigation is completed.

Shorunmu Handed Temporary Responsibility

Abia Warriors also announced that former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu and his assistants have been tasked with taking immediate charge of the team’s management and operations, pending further notice.

The club urged the suspended officials to cooperate fully with the investigative panel whenever required.

Club chairman John Obuh told Completesports.com on Monday evening that it was regrettable the club found itself in such an embarrassing situation despite earlier assurances.
