Mahdi Shehu, a public commentator, has referred to Northern Nigeria as a “land of the living dead,” expressing worry about the region’s condition.

He made the comment on Saturday via his official X account.

He described the population as living yet unable to address the challenges surrounding them.

He said that many residents live in fear and confusion amid insecurity and hardship.

“The current inhabitants of Northern Nigeria are alive but dead,” he said.

He added that people have become traumatized, fearful, and unable to confront reality.

He observed that this has eroded their capacity to demand change.

Shehu also criticized regional leadership, claiming a lack of credible direction and accountability.

He blamed compromised elites and weak traditional institutions for failing to protect and guide the populace.

He further noted that citizens have become passive, permitting the situation to deteriorate.

“They are spineless, visionless, planless and have been reduced into a priceless laughing stock. All these things are possible because they have no credible leadership, with compromised elites and cowardly traditional Institutions, docile citizens, all together surrounded by the venoms of envy, hate, greed and man’s inhumanity to man,” he wrote.

“RIP NORTHERN NIGERIA. Imams and priest are not available for burial because most of them are standing on a mandate.”
