Nigerians in diaspora urged to participate actively in US politics

The leader of the United Nigerian Americans Council (UNAC) in Maryland, Dr. Chris Ademiluyi, affirmed that the organization remains dedicated to fostering greater political engagement among Nigerian-Americans in the United States.

Ademiluyi explained that UNAC was founded in 2019 with the goal of encouraging Nigerians abroad to register to vote, take an active role in elections, and run for public office in the U.S.

She made these remarks in a statement released to Diaspora Tales on Friday, emphasizing the importance of supporting Nigerians who seek elective positions overseas.

According to her, the organization continues to focus on empowerment, political awareness, and increasing Nigerian representation within the American political landscape.

“Our vision and dedication continue to guide the organization’s efforts in advocating greater political participation and representation in Maryland,” she said.

“UNAC‑MD is committed to raising awareness and building support within the Nigerian‑American community,” she added.

Ademiluyi noted that the council aims to boost the number of politically conscious voters capable of influencing elections and policy decisions.

She added that while many members may be reluctant to make direct financial contributions to politicians, they believe that voting remains a powerful means of supporting candidates and shaping governance.

“The organization promotes and acknowledges the unique perspective of its members: while they may not believe in making direct financial contributions to politicians, their votes are viewed as a powerful form of support,” she said.
