Nigerian Navy @70: Naval Dockyard Visits Orphanage, Reaffirms Commitment to Child Welfare

During the 70th‑anniversary celebrations of the Nigerian Navy, the Naval Dockyard Limited visited Living Fountain Orphanage to reinforce its dedication to the welfare and future prospects of vulnerable children.

The visit was led by the Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard Limited, Rear Admiral I.E. Shehu, and represented by Commodore O.D. Ogbologu along with other naval officers.

Speaking at the event, Ogbologu expressed the Naval Dockyard’s deep concern for children in orphanages and highlighted the Navy’s willingness to support and inspire those who might one day wear a naval uniform.

He said the outreach was part of the service’s effort to give back to society and strengthen ties with local communities as the Navy marks seven decades of national service and humanitarian commitment.

Lady Bethy Obieri, founder of the orphanage, thanked the Nigerian Navy for what she described as a bold and compassionate gesture, noting that the visit brought joy to the children and the home’s management.

She added that the orphanage has survived thanks to the goodwill of caring individuals and organizations, and that several children raised there are thriving both in Nigeria and abroad.

“The home is doing well with the help of kind‑hearted citizens like the Navy,” she said, commending the officers for their display of love and concern.

During the visit, orphanage staff guided the officers around the facility, giving them a firsthand look at the daily operations and the children’s welfare needs.

In an emotional moment, the oldest resident, an 18‑year‑old whose identity was not disclosed, thanked the Navy for the food items and support, especially amid the country’s economic hardship.

The orphanage management also revealed that the young girl recently scored 274 on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and hopes to study Law at the University of Lagos.

Lady Bethy said the sight of the naval officers in their white uniforms brought happiness to her heart, stressing that the food supplies donated by Naval Dockyard Limited would greatly aid the home and its children.

Ogbologu assured the management of ongoing attention to the children’s welfare, pledging continued support and partnership.

The visit, part of the Nigerian Navy’s platinum jubilee celebrations, highlighted the service’s humanitarian role and its broader commitment to national security, maritime defence, social responsibility, and community development.
