All 36 Nigerian governors, acting through the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), have voiced support for the creation of state police forces.
The endorsement came after the forum’s second meeting in Abuja, which ran from Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday.
Governors emphasized that any new policing structure must be grounded in clear constitutional provisions and must safeguard citizens’ rights.
According to the Daily Post, the meeting addressed several national priorities, including security, electricity reform, and nutrition.
However, the topic that dominated the discussion was state policing, as insecurity remains a pressing issue in many parts of the country.
In a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governors reported that they had reviewed recent progress toward establishing a functional state police system.
The forum received detailed presentations from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of state attorneys‑general outlining ongoing efforts to support state police across Nigeria.
Governors also discussed consultations aimed at reviewing proposed constitutional amendments and operational frameworks that would guide implementation.
Speaking after the meeting, Dapo Abiodun said that while state policing is an important step in addressing security challenges, the structure must be carefully designed.
“We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, at our meeting held today, deliberated on issues affecting the country,” Abiodun said.
Following the deliberations, the forum received a presentation from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of the Honourable Attorneys‑General of the States on efforts to support establishing State Police in Nigeria.
The forum also noted a dedicated consultation with the Attorneys‑General to review the proposed constitutional amendments and frameworks.
