The Nigerian government has reportedly instructed Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, the vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, to immediately rescind the appointment of twenty‑four aides.
The directive, which is said to have been issued on 25 June 2026 and signed by Kareem O. L., acting director of university education on behalf of the minister of education, cites alleged breaches of due process as the basis for the order.
Professor Dozie assumed office as the ninth VC of FUTO Owerri on 19 June 2026. Shortly thereafter, reports emerged that he had appointed the 24 aides.
Following the release of the alleged correspondence, the ministry condemned the appointments and directed the vice‑chancellor to reverse them “forthwith” and to provide evidence of compliance without delay.
The government described the appointments as irregular and inconsistent with the regulations governing Nigeria’s federal universities, stating that they were “at variance with the extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.”
In addition to the cancellation order, the leaked letter summoned the vice‑chancellor to Abuja for an urgent meeting with ministry officials on 29 June.
A copy of the communication was also forwarded to the National Universities Commission (NUC), a move experts say underscores the seriousness of the matter and the potential implications for university governance.
At the time of filing this report, neither the management of FUTO nor officials of the Federal Ministry of Education had publicly commented on the leaked directive.
