The Nigerian military announced that it sent a company of soldiers to the Republic of Benin in April 2026, during the country’s electioneering period and presidential inauguration.

Acting Director of Army Public Relations Colonel Appolonia Anele disclosed the deployment in a statement issued on Monday, noting that the move had been authorized by President Bola Tinubu.

“The Nigerian Army (NA), acting on the directive of the President and Commander‑in‑Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deployed a company of troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 as part of proactive measures to safeguard democratic stability and forestall any breakdown of law and order during the country’s electioneering period,” Anele said.

Anele added that the troops were positioned to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to ensure democratic stability in the neighbouring West African country. Although not directly involved in election duties, the soldiers were strategically placed to provide security support before, during, and after the electoral process.

Operating under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, the troops carried out patrols, monitored key locations, and maintained a security presence across parts of Cotonou and surrounding areas. The operation later extended to the successful provision of security during the inauguration ceremony of Benin Republic President Romuald Wadagni.

The Army said personnel were deployed to strategic locations, including the main inauguration venue and other designated points, while mobile patrol teams conducted area domination operations to strengthen security.

“The successful execution of this mission underscores the capacity of the Nigerian Army for rapid deployment, operational professionalism and its readiness to support regional peace initiatives,” the statement read.

The Army added that the mission reflected Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, regional peace, and the objectives of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
