After a series of xenophobic incidents in South Africa, a group of Nigerians who were evacuated by the Federal Government have reached Lagos safely.

The evacuees landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday aboard an Air Peace aircraft.

Their return flight was part of a coordinated effort by the government to respond to the renewed attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.

Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, was scheduled to greet the returnees at the airport.

The evacuation follows growing concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, after reports of violence against foreign-owned businesses and communities.

Earlier, the Federal Government confirmed it would continue to engage with South African authorities to protect Nigerians and prevent further escalation of tensions.
