Anthony Odiong, a 57‑year‑old Nigerian‑born Roman Catholic priest, was found guilty by a jury in Waco, Texas, of sexually assaulting women under his spiritual care.

The Texas court convicted Odiong on one count of first‑degree sexual assault and two counts of second‑degree sexual assault. The 12‑member jury—eight women and four men—deliberated for about two hours before delivering the verdict.

Prosecutors argued that Odiong abused his position as a spiritual leader to manipulate vulnerable women into sexual relationships while offering them counseling and religious guidance. Two women testified that the priest used his authority to gain their trust before engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct.

Mary Doe, the first victim, told jurors that Odiong began a sexual relationship with her while she was receiving spiritual counseling during a difficult divorce. She also testified that her son once unexpectedly discovered her and the priest engaged in sexual activity inside her home.

Jane Doe, the second complainant, alleged that Odiong pressured her into sexual acts while presenting the encounters as part of his spiritual guidance. Prosecutors maintained that the priest took advantage of the women’s emotional vulnerability and the trust they placed in him as a religious figure.

Odiong pleaded not guilty to the charges. He now faces a potential lengthy prison sentence, including life imprisonment on the first‑degree sexual assault conviction. Sentencing is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The case attracted wider attention after a 2024 investigation uncovered allegations of sexual misconduct and coercive behavior by Odiong during his ministry in Texas and Louisiana. Authorities said the publication of those allegations prompted one victim to formally approach law enforcement with additional claims. Investigators subsequently collected further evidence, including DNA findings reportedly linked to a child fathered by Odiong while he was serving in Louisiana.

Odiong, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was ordained as a Catholic priest in Nigeria in 1993 before moving to the United States, where he served in several Catholic parishes across Texas and Louisiana.
