The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, announced that Nigerian Army troops would be deployed to the Republic of Benin as part of intensified regional security operations aimed at countering terrorism and transnational crime across West Africa.
Shaibu made the statement on Monday, at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja.
He said the deployment underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening intelligence sharing, strategic partnerships and coordinated security mechanisms designed to deny criminal and terrorist groups freedom of action within Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
According to him, sending troops to Benin reflects Nigeria’s resolve to reinforce the regional security architecture and enhance collective responses to emerging threats in the sub‑region.
Shaibu stressed that commanders must remain adaptive, mission‑focused and fully committed to inter‑agency and multinational cooperation in ongoing and future operations.
The COAS noted that the Army continues to prioritise equipment modernisation, infrastructure expansion and combat support services to boost operational efficiency and troop welfare.
He explained that the induction of modern platforms, refurbishment of ageing equipment, improved maintenance practices and indigenous repair initiatives have significantly enhanced troops’ mobility, firepower, surveillance capabilities and operational sustainability.
Shaibu further disclosed that welfare initiatives have been intensified, including the construction and renovation of soldiers’ accommodation, improved healthcare delivery, prompt medical evacuations and enhanced skill‑based allowances for personnel.
He added that the Nigerian Army will continue to strengthen civil‑military cooperation efforts aimed at promoting peace, addressing humanitarian needs and supporting socio‑economic development in host communities.
The COAS urged participants at the conference to remain innovative and solution‑driven in addressing evolving security challenges and preparing the Army for future operational realities.
He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the conference would produce practical strategies to further strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army.
