The Nigerian women’s 4×100 m relay team—Rosemary Nwankwo, Obi Jennifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu—finished with a time of 42.94 seconds, securing the gold medal and successfully defending their title at the African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
They outperformed the Liberian squad, who took silver, and the host nation Ghana, which finished third in the final on Friday.
With this performance, Nigeria became the first team in the history of the women’s 4×100 m at the Championships to run under 43 seconds, setting a new record.
In the men’s event, the Nigerian quartet of Favour Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin and Chidera Ezeakor earned the silver medal, clocking 38.70 seconds in the 4×100 m final.
The race was won by Côte d’Ivoire, while Ghana claimed the bronze medal.
