Peter Obi, a senior member of the Africa Democratic Congress (NDC), has said that Nigeria needs a wealth‑creator of his kind.
Obi made the statement in response to remarks by former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, who, at Chatham House in London in 2023, claimed he was more qualified to be Nigeria’s president because he holds a Ph.D.
At the time, Kwankwaso was the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate.
Both the former Kano State governor and Obi are currently members of the NDC.
In a Thursday interview with News Central’s “60 Minutes with Kay,” Obi said that no presidential candidate—including President Bola Tinubu—matches his experience in wealth creation.
“Qualification is a matter of perspective and depends on one’s background. Kwankwaso claimed he was more qualified because he has a Ph.D., which is not a bad thing. I do not hold a Ph.D.”
“He has some experience and exposure; he served as a minister, and that is undisputed. I do not believe his statement was wrong, but Nigeria currently needs a person who can create wealth and manage it efficiently.”
“I have founded well‑known businesses from the ground up, both domestically and internationally.”
“No one today, not even the president, can claim to have gone through what I have.”
