President Bola Tinubu said on Friday that the insecurity his administration is trying to tackle stems from the collapse of grassroots governance.
He made the remarks during a nationwide broadcast marking this year’s June 12 Democracy Day.
According to the president, the government has pursued financial autonomy for the 774 local governments in an effort to strengthen grassroots institutions.
He added that ineffective local‑government administration is a major obstacle to Nigeria’s progress.
“Recognising that democracy is undermined when people do not feel its impact, my administration has sought financial autonomy for our 774 local councils,” Tinubu said. “A fundamental challenge to our nation’s advancement has been ineffective local government administration. The insecurity we are addressing is partly due to the collapse of grassroots governance,” he added.
