Nigeria Elected to UN CEDAW Committee

Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

The announcement came on Friday from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, who extended congratulations to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and to Nigerian women for the achievement.

Nigeria received 123 votes in the election, securing a seat on the women‑focused body.

Other countries elected include Sri Lanka, which topped the poll with 144 votes; Egypt with 141 votes; Uganda with 140 votes; Mongolia with 136 votes; Canada with 135 votes; Estonia and Azerbaijan each with 133 votes; Cuba with 128 votes; Spain with 125 votes; Mexico with 119 votes; and Antigua and Barbuda with 118 votes.

Countries that did not win seats were Mozambique (103 votes), Gabon (101 votes), South Africa (73 votes), Burkina Faso (61 votes), Niger (58 votes), Benin (56 votes), Namibia (55 votes), and Albania (44 votes).

The CEDAW committee monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and promotes gender equality worldwide.
