Nigeria and several other West and Central African nations have pledged more than $27 billion for port infrastructure expansion, a move aimed at boosting regional trade integration, enhancing maritime logistics, and stimulating economic growth across the sub‑region.

Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and President of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), announced the commitment during the opening of PMAWCA’s Mid‑Year Session in Lagos.

“These investments demonstrate growing confidence in the strategic importance of ports as drivers of trade and economic development in West and Central Africa,” Dantsoho said.

He highlighted key projects, including the $20 billion Simandou‑Morebaya Deep Sea Port in Guinea, the $2 billion Port San Pedro in Côte d’Ivoire, and the $1.5 billion Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos.

Dantsoho also noted that Ghana and Senegal are pursuing port expansion and modernization, while Nigeria continues to attract new investments for the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.

At the conference, themed “Ports of the Future: Combining Logistical Resilience with Inclusive Community Development,” Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding port infrastructure and modernizing operations to establish the country as a leading maritime hub in Africa.

Oyetola stated that the Federal Government has approved the development of additional deep seaports and is implementing reforms to enhance efficiency, trade facilitation, and competitiveness within the maritime sector.

The minister also reiterated the administration’s focus on infrastructure upgrades, digital transformation, and improved security across Nigerian waters.
