In a significant move toward regional stability, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Mr. Joseph Beti Assomo, in Yaoundé on Wednesday. The agreement aims to deepen bilateral defence cooperation and secure the shared southern border.
The Ministry of Defence said the signing followed two days of intensive discussions between defence and security experts from both countries. The MoU establishes a modernised framework to counter emerging threats in terrestrial and maritime domains.
Key focus areas highlighted during the meetings included enhanced operational coordination, intelligence sharing, logistics support, joint military training, personnel exchange programmes, and stronger mechanisms for a collective response to emerging security challenges.
Speaking at the ceremony, General Musa (rtd) noted that the MoU would provide a structured framework for military cooperation and operations between the two nations, further institutionalising collaboration on common security concerns.
On defence industrial cooperation, the minister reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to expand collaboration in defence technology and innovation. He pointed out that limited indigenous production of military hardware has long hindered African defence capability development and stressed the need for stronger regional industrial partnerships.
He also highlighted opportunities under Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation framework and reaffirmed the country’s openness to collaboration in defence manufacturing, technology transfer, research, innovation, and capacity development.
In response, Mr. Assomo expressed interest in advancing cooperation in defence innovation and technology. He confirmed that a formal proposal framework is currently being finalised to solidify bilateral arrangements in defence technology.
The agreement marks a pivotal milestone in Nigeria–Cameroon relations, reinforcing both nations’ shared commitment to sustainable peace, regional sovereignty, and collaborative defence.
Discussions also underscored the importance of operationalising the recently established Combined Maritime Joint Task Force as a strategic platform for enhancing maritime security and safeguarding economic and security interests within the Gulf of Guinea, where both countries remain key stakeholders.
