Niger road crash kills five, injures eight

On Sunday, a road collision in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State claimed the lives of at least five people and left eight others seriously injured.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Desk Officer for Agaie, Hussaini Guregi, confirmed the incident.

Guregi said the crash involved a passenger‑laden trailer carrying about 40 people and a tanker.

He added that the trailer was traveling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Shagamu in Ogun State when the accident occurred.

According to him, five victims died on the scene, while the injured passengers were transported to the General Hospital in Agaie for treatment.

Preliminary investigations point to a faulty tanker that had been abandoned on the road and an unsuccessful overtaking attempt by another trailer as the causes of the collision.

“As the passenger trailer tried to avoid the stationary tanker, the driver lost control, resulting in the crash,” Guregi explained.

The bodies of the deceased were reportedly taken to the General Hospital Agaie mortuary while authorities continue to investigate the incident.
