MINNA — The Niger State Government ordered the immediate closure of six illegal mineral processing sites in the Kontagora Local Government Area on Saturday.
The shutdown was carried out by the State Ministry of Mineral Resources with the assistance of security personnel, including officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals based at the Federal Headquarters in Abuja.
The operation was led by Commissioner for Mineral Resources Muhammad Qasim Danjuma, North Central Zonal Head of Mining Marshals A.C. Onoja, and other security officers tasked with protecting the nation’s mineral resources.
Prior to the closures, the enforcement team conducted a two‑day monitoring and stakeholder engagement tour across Mariga and Kontagora LGAs to strengthen mining regulations and promote peace in host communities.
During the visit, the team met with traditional rulers and community leaders in Wamba Ward, Mariga LGA, urging residents and operators to cease illegal mining activities and warning of the consequences for offenders.
The Commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring sustainable management of mineral resources and improved security in mining communities.
Dibie Maureen, Information Officer for the Ministry, said the closures were part of an effort to sanitise the mining sector, curb illegal operations, and ensure that mineral resources contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.
She added that discussions with stakeholders also addressed community disputes linked to mining activities in Wamba, Mangoro, Igwama and Kasuwan Garba, with an emphasis on restoring peace and strengthening cooperation.
Traditional rulers and community stakeholders reportedly praised the government for the intervention, describing it as timely and pledging support for efforts to promote lawful mining and peaceful coexistence in the affected areas.
