The most recent restrictive measures announced by Canada and Russia over the past 24 hours include hundreds of individuals and organizations.
On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new sanctions aimed at Russia’s defence industry, energy revenues, and shadow fleet, among other sectors.
The sanctions will affect more than 162 individuals, entities, and vessels. Carney said, “We’re keeping the pressure on Russia to negotiate peace—a just and lasting peace—for Ukraine and Europe.”
In total, Ottawa’s punitive actions against Moscow in recent months have targeted over 3,000 individuals and entities and 600 vessels.
In response, Russia announced its own sanctions, releasing a categorized list of 103 Canadian nationals it says are prohibited from entering its territory.
The list names Members of Parliament in the Senate and House of Commons, Secretaries of State, parliamentary secretaries to ministers or secretaries of state, and MPs who do not hold cabinet positions.
Other names include Marie Annabelle Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff; Christopher William Westdal, former ambassador to Russia and Ukraine; and Hillel Neuer, head of United Nations Watch.
Moscow claimed that these citizens—mostly members of the Canadian parliament—have opposed Russia’s constitutional framework and foreign policy and supported the confiscation of state assets.
The Foreign Ministry also criticized the Carney administration for continuing the policy line established by the Justin Trudeau government, accusing it of supporting the neo‑Nazi authorities in Kiev.
