The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), together with the International Labour Organization (ILO), officially unveiled the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Implementation Guide for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria. The guide aims to reinforce sustainable business practices and improve the competitiveness of small enterprises nationwide.
The ceremony took place in Lagos and is intended to assist MSMEs in incorporating ESG principles into their daily operations, fostering more responsible, transparent, and sustainable business conduct.
During the event, Adewale‑Smatt Oyerinde, Director General of NECA, noted that ESG has become a pivotal global business dialogue that influences long‑term sustainability, competitiveness, and access to opportunities for organisations across all sectors.
Oyerinde observed that many MSMEs find it difficult to comprehend and implement ESG requirements in a cost‑effective manner. This challenge prompted NECA and its partners to create the guide after extensive research on ESG awareness and adoption among Nigerian firms.
“Investors, regulators, consumers and global value chains increasingly expect businesses of any size to show responsible and sustainable practices. This guide is intended to be practical, accessible and action‑oriented. It offers MSMEs clear instructions on grasping ESG concepts, adopting sustainable practices, identifying ESG risks and opportunities, and positioning themselves for better access to finance and market opportunities,” he said.
He reaffirmed NECA’s commitment to support businesses beyond the guide’s release through ongoing engagement, training, advisory services and strategic partnerships aimed at deepening ESG adoption across sectors.
