The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, rtd, has expressed alarm at the rising incidence of substance abuse in Nigeria, describing drug dependence as a growing national emergency.

Addressing the third edition of the “Fly Above the High” conference in Abuja, Marwa warned that the expanding drug crisis threatens families, communities, the economy, and national security.

“Substance abuse affects personal development, societal development, the economy and the security of the country,” he said.

Marwa urged swift, coordinated action to tackle the problem, emphasizing that drug abuse is undermining the prospects of many young Nigerians and demands a nationwide response that includes government agencies, schools, families, and community leaders.
