The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained an 84‑year‑old and a 75‑year‑old grandfather on allegations of supplying illicit drugs to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia.

Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, announced the arrests on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Babafemi, the first suspect was apprehended by NDLEA operatives on Friday after credible intelligence indicated he was distributing illegal substances to young students. The suspect was also known to sell drugs at his patent medicine shop on 4 Club Road, Umuahia.

During a search of the premises, authorities recovered 4.64 kg of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.

The second suspect, a pensioner also involved in the drug trade, was seized by security guards at Saint Silas Secondary School in Old Umuahia. Babafemi said the guards had caught him supplying illicit drugs to two teenage students (names withheld). The guards then handed the suspects over to the police, who transferred them to NDLEA on June 18.

In his statement, one of the two teenagers—a 15‑year‑old SS2 student—claimed that the 84‑year‑old grandfather supplied him with drugs, which he also sold to other students.

Babafemi added that while the two grandfathers are expected to face court, the students have been placed under counseling and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives intercepted a consignment of ADB Chminaca, a synthetic cannabinoid classified as a dangerous new psychoactive substance (NPS), at a courier firm in Lagos. The shipment, originating from China, weighed 9.5 kg and was concealed in a carton.

“This was followed by another seizure on Tuesday, June 16, at a different logistics company in Lagos, where 300 g of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, was found hidden in ladies’ handbags,” Babafemi said.
