ONITSHA — Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a lawyer and social commentator, warned the Igbo people to put the security of their homeland first, urging communities to stay alert and ready as insecurity spreads throughout the country.
In a statement titled “Ndigbo, the Time to Think Home Is Now: History Never Forgives a People Who Ignore the Signs of Danger,” Ejiofor voiced alarm about the increasing presence of terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across Nigeria.
He said that warnings about Nigeria’s deteriorating security have been issued for years, yet many people have disregarded them.
“Today, virtually every region of Nigeria is sitting on a security powder keg, while many of those entrusted with governance appear more focused on political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections than on addressing the threats confronting the nation,” he said.
Ejiofor highlighted that violent attacks, kidnappings, killings, rape, destruction of farmlands and community displacement have become frequent problems across the nation.
He added that criminal groups have set up strongholds in forests and other ungoverned areas, from which they launch attacks on vulnerable communities.
“The reality is that heavily armed criminal elements have created vast zones of fear and insecurity across the country. This situation should not be ignored,” he said.
He urged communities to reinforce lawful security structures and back initiatives designed to safeguard lives and property.
Ejiofor called on the Igbo people to promote traditional institutions, community organisations and other legitimate platforms that can help maintain security and stability.
He cited reports of traditional institutions in other regions working to address security concerns, emphasizing that community involvement is vital for confronting new threats.
