Investment banker and economist Atedo Peterside argues that Nigeria can curb “judicial rascality” by enforcing disciplinary measures.

In a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, Peterside warned that relying solely on appellate courts to correct wrongs could lead judges to issue what he termed ‘procurable obnoxious judgements’.

He was responding to the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which overturned its earlier order that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.

“The cure for Judicial Rascality is disciplinary action. Glossing over rascality whilst relying on Appeal Courts alone to overturn obnoxious judgements encourages more judges to go into the lucrative business of delivering procurable obnoxious judgements,” he said.

The NDC has rejected the court's decision and plans to appeal to the Court of Appeal.
