UYO—Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to tackling maritime crime within the country’s territorial waters.

Abbas made the statement during the opening ceremony of new infrastructure at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee, located in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, on Tuesday.

Represented by Rear Admiral Chidozie Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Eastern Naval Command, Abbas highlighted the Navy’s ongoing role in safeguarding the Gulf of Guinea through a range of operations and security initiatives.

“We are working toward a more efficient and optimised Nigerian Navy to enhance maritime security and support economic prosperity,” Abbas said.

He added that the Navy is currently celebrating 70 years of dedicated service, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and vital national assets.

According to Abbas, the new projects at NNS Jubilee aim to improve the living and working conditions of naval personnel. He noted that the inauguration is part of the broader 70th‑anniversary celebrations and reflects the Naval Headquarters’ ongoing efforts to raise welfare standards across units and formations.

The CNS emphasized that personnel welfare remains a top priority, stating that adequate accommodation and a conducive working environment are essential for maintaining high morale, discipline, and operational readiness among officers and ratings.

He added that the new accommodation facilities and other remodelled projects at NNS Jubilee will alleviate housing challenges at the base and enhance the comfort and efficiency of personnel in carrying out their duties.

Abbas praised Commander NNS Jubilee, Commodore Mohammed Manga, and the ship’s crew for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the successful execution of the projects. He urged all personnel to use the facilities responsibly and maintain them with care.

Our correspondent reports that the inaugurated projects include a newly constructed 2 × 2 Senior Rates Accommodation, a remodelled NNS Jubilee galley, and a new ship’s bell for NNS Jubilee.
