The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that a significant power outage occurred in Lagos after a voltage instability hit the national grid on Thursday morning.
TCN said the disturbance began at approximately 8:19 a.m. when a sudden voltage fluctuation arose in the national grid and rapidly propagated through the Lagos corridor.
The company explained that the fluctuation caused several power plants to shut down, led to outages on transmission lines, and ultimately disrupted electricity supply throughout Lagos and nearby regions.
To stabilize the grid and avert a larger collapse, the National Control Centre reportedly instructed several generation firms to cut output immediately to curb the rising frequency in the network.
TCN disclosed that Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe convened an emergency meeting with senior TCN officials and the Nigerian Independent System Operator soon after the incident was reported.
TCN said the meeting concentrated on coordinating immediate restoration actions and outlining steps to restore normal power supply in the affected areas.
TCN added that the Benin–Egbin 330kV line, which tripped during the disturbance, has been restored and is now carrying bulk electricity.
Engineers from the Benin and Omotoso subregions are working to repair faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line to fully restore power to the Lagos network.
TCN apologized for the inconvenience to residents, businesses, and consumers, and assured that the Ministry of Power and related agencies are working to restore normal bulk electricity transmission as swiftly as possible.
