The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to allow former Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir El‑Rufai immediate access to medical care.
The appeal was issued in a statement signed by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, and was provided to DAILY POST on Thursday evening.
According to DAILY POST, El‑Rufai has been in the ICPC’s custody for several days. Akintola expressed concern that the former governor’s health is worsening and that continued denial of medical treatment would violate his rights.
“We remind ICPC that denial of access to medical care for a detainee is a gross violation of Section 34(1)(a)(b)(c) and Section 33(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which stipulates, ‘Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly… (b) no person shall be held in slavery or servitude.’” Akintola said.
“We therefore demand immediate medical attention for the former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El‑Rufai. We frown upon any form of violation of his Allah‑given fundamental human rights while in ICPC’s custody or elsewhere.”
