Benfica manager José Mourinho said he declined to discuss a new contract with the club this week.

He explained that fresh terms had been presented to him earlier in the week.

According to the 63‑year‑old coach, it was not the right time to negotiate with the Portuguese side.

Mourinho, who is expected to move to Real Madrid in the summer, announced that he will make a final decision next week.

He told reporters: “Yes, on Wednesday I received a contract extension offer from Benfica. The offer was given to my agent, but I didn’t want to see it, find out about it or consider it. I’ll only do that from Sunday onwards; I’d say on Sunday.”

Benfica will have Champions League stakes to play for when they face Estoril this weekend.
