Motorcycle rider injured in alleged customs chase in Lagos

A commercial motorcycle rider was badly injured on Sunday after a reported head‑on collision with officers of the Nigeria Customs Service’s Seme Border Command. The incident took place on Joseph Dosu Way in Badagry, Lagos State, near Beach Town Mall at about 6:30 a.m.

The rider was transporting six bags of rice from Badagry Market to Badagry Roundabout when the alleged collision occurred.

Witnesses say that Customs officers, who were patrolling from the roundabout toward Badagry town, attempted to intercept the rider upon seeing the rice bags. According to residents, the patrol vehicle drove directly at the motorcycle, resulting in a head‑on collision that threw the rider into a roadside gutter and left him critically injured.

Residents also claimed that the officers seized the rice bags and departed the scene without providing assistance to the injured rider.

Speaking to Vanguard at the scene, a witness identified only as Kikekon stated: “The motorcycle rider was carrying six bags of rice from Badagry Market to Badagry Roundabout, while the Customs officers were moving from the roundabout toward Badagry town. When the officers sighted the rider with the rice, they allegedly drove directly toward him, causing a head‑on collision that threw him into the gutter where he sustained serious injuries.”

“Instead of attending to him, the Customs officers took the rice and left him battling for his life. This is one of many operations carried out by Customs officers in the Badagry border community, where they continue to intercept rice within the town after it has already crossed the border,” added Kikekon.

When contacted, the Seme Border Command Customs Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs (SC) Ayagbalo Tunde, did not respond to a phone call but replied to a text message saying, “I’m in church, sir.”
