MMIA Commits to Enhancing Airside Safety and Operational Discipline

The safety committee at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) has announced a series of comprehensive safety measures after an emergency‑style stakeholder meeting of its Airport Safety Committee. The new rules signal a zero‑tolerance stance on reckless driving, debris hazards, and other safety violations at Nigeria’s busiest airport.

The committee, composed of safety managers from various airport stakeholders, meets regularly to discuss safety issues and develop collective solutions.

In a decisive action, the committee has reduced the airside speed limit from 15 km/h to 10 km/h in the International Terminal Zone 1 construction areas, where the ongoing rehabilitation of the E‑Wing and D‑Wing has significantly narrowed operational space. The 15 km/h limit will remain in place for ITZ 2 zones. Officials confirmed that adequate signage will be installed immediately to enforce the new limits.

The newly inaugurated Airside Taskforce is now fully operational, tasked with strict monitoring of all vehicles, equipment, and personnel. Industry sources say the Taskforce reflects a renewed commitment to ending the years of lax enforcement that have plagued the airport’s operational areas.

In a stern warning to ground handlers, fuel marketers, and catering services, the Committee declared that drinking, smoking, and reckless driving on the airside are strictly prohibited, and regular alcohol testing is now mandatory.

The committee identified Foreign Object Debris (FOD) as a critical safety concern and explicitly banned the sale of sachet alcohol drinks within the airport environment.
