Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has named Spain winger Lamine Yamal as the player who will win the Golden Ball at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament began this year with co‑hosts Mexico defeating South Africa 2‑0 on Thursday night.

It will run for more than five weeks, with the champions crowned on July 19.

Many top footballers are considered contenders for the prestigious Golden Ball award, which is given to the best player of the tournament.

Names such as Lionel Messi (Argentina), Kylian Mbappé (France), Harry Kane (England), and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) are among the potential nominees.

“I have to go with Lamine Yamal,” Mikel Obi said.

“He’s just amazing. The way he plays, the confidence he brings, everything he does is superb. I think me and every football fan are looking forward to watching him again, and I think he will be great again.”
