Maresca: Succeeding Guardiola At Man City Is A Privilege

New Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has described succeeding Pep Guardiola at the club as a privilege and a nice challenge.

He acknowledged that clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal struggled after the exits of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger.

Maresca highlighted that City having only three managers in 17 years provides a solid foundation for success.

“First of all, I have to say that it’s a privilege,” said the Italian in his first press conference as City boss.

“I’ve said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world in the last 20, 25 years. But again, it’s a challenge. It’s nice. It’s a privilege.”

“I think the organisation is the main thing,” he said. “They (City) had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal, it doesn’t happen often.

“So this is probably one of the things that I’m confident that we can do a great job.”

Maresca described Jack Grealish, who has returned from his loan at Everton, as a player with a big heart but would see what happens with regard to his future.

He also said “anything can happen” with number two goalkeeper James Trafford, who has been linked with Leeds.

Asked if there might be any more signings following Elliot Anderson’s £116million arrival, Maresca said: “There are still a few things to do, but we are in the process of doing that.”

City jet off on their pre-season tour next week and are just three weeks away from their first competitive fixture against Arsenal. For Maresca, the preparations for the start of the season have ramped up.
