Manchester United are preparing to open formal discussions with Michael Carrick about taking over as the club’s permanent manager after his successful stint as interim coach.
An executive‑committee meeting scheduled for this week is expected to endorse Carrick as the leading candidate to replace Ruben Amorim on a full‑time basis.
Sources close to the club say a final decision has not yet been reached, and United are also reported to have explored a possible appointment of Aston Villa’s Unai Emery.
Carrick emerged as the frontrunner after guiding United back into the Champions League during his caretaker period at Old Trafford.

United secured qualification for Europe’s premier club competition after a dramatic 3‑2 win over Liverpool.
The victory represented Carrick’s 10th triumph in 14 league matches since assuming temporary charge.
Overall, the former United midfielder has amassed 10 wins, three draws and only two defeats from 15 Premier League games.
No other side in the division has collected more points than United during that span, with rivals Manchester City trailing closely behind.
Carrick’s calm demeanor and tactical adjustments have earned praise from both players and supporters after a difficult period under Amorim.
Fernandes, Mainoo revived under interim boss
One of the most notable improvements has come from club captain Bruno Fernandes, who has returned to top form under Carrick.
Fernandes has supplied 12 assists in his last 15 league appearances and recently received the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year award, becoming the first United player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to win the accolade.
Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has also re‑established himself in the squad after a period of limited opportunities earlier in the season.
The academy graduate has started almost every match under Carrick and has recently signed a new long‑term contract with the club.
