Man United continue to explore defensive options ahead of a demanding season that will see them compete in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Afrik-Foot reports.

The club’s search has largely focused on left-backs following the departure of Tyrell Malacia and concerns over Luke Shaw’s long-term fitness record. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and West Ham United youngster El Hadji Malick Diouf have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

While those names continue to dominate transfer discussions, one player appears to offer solutions to several of United’s problems at once; Fulham and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey.

Reasons Calvin Bassey should be Man United’s next signing

Elite dynamic utility

One of Bassey’s biggest strengths is his versatility. The Nigerian international began his professional career as a left-back during his rise at Rangers. His athleticism, power and attacking instincts made him one of the most exciting full-backs in Scotland before he successfully transitioned into a centre-back.

That switch proved crucial as he helped Rangers reach the 2022 UEFA Europa League final, attracting interest from across Europe. Ajax subsequently paid a then-record transfer fee for a Nigerian defender to bring him to Amsterdam before Fulham signed him the following year.

Today, Bassey operates mainly as a centre-back for both Fulham and Nigeria. Yet he remains capable of slotting into the left-back position whenever required. For a Manchester United side preparing for a packed Champions League schedule, having one player capable of covering two positions at a high level would be invaluable.

He can provide immediate competition for Shaw while also offering left-footed balance in central defence.

Bassey’s the best defender in Africa

Few defenders on the continent have matched Bassey’s recent performances for Nigeria. The 26-year-old was one of the standout performers at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the Super Eagles finish third after defeating Egypt in the bronze-medal playoff. Nigeria went through the entire tournament without losing a single match in regulation time, with Bassey forming the foundation of a defence that consistently frustrated elite attacking players.

His combination of strength, pace and aggression has made him one of Africa’s most feared defenders.

Interestingly, Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has already identified Bassey as one of the toughest opponents he has faced.

When asked to name the most difficult defenders of his career, Mbeumo told Zack en Roue Libre via TikTok:

“Calvin Bassey. And him, I think it came out a lot at AFCON. Even the AFCON before as well. Calvin Bassey. He’s twice my size. He’s too powerful. It’s crazy.

“And on top of that, he’s fast too, the same, he’s strong. No, it’s not nice to play against him, but… yeah.”

Bassey’s ability was also evident when he came up against Cristiano Ronaldo in Nigeria’s high-profile friendly against Portugal, producing a composed display against one of football’s greatest forwards.

As Bassey enters his prime years, the next logical step could be competing for Premier League and Champions League trophies.

Premier League proven and reliable

Unlike several names on United’s shortlist, Bassey would not require an adjustment period. He already understands the demands of English football and has established himself as one of Fulham’s most dependable performers.

Last season, he completed more than 30 Premier League appearances without suffering an injury or suspension, a remarkable achievement for a defender playing in arguably the world’s most physical leagues.

That reliability could be particularly important for United. Shaw has struggled with recurring fitness issues in recent years, while the club’s defensive department has frequently been stretched by injuries during crucial stages of the campaign. Bassey offers the durability needed for a season that could involve more than 50 matches across multiple competitions.

His consistency extends to international football as well. Since making his Super Eagles debut in 2022, he has rarely missed an important match for Nigeria.

A cost-effective alternative

Financially, Bassey may represent one of the smartest opportunities available to Manchester United. While Newcastle reportedly value Lewis Hall at between £50 million and £60 million, Bassey’s market value is estimated at around £25 million to £30 million.

That means United could potentially secure an experienced Premier League defender for almost half the price of some alternative targets. Such savings would allow the club to invest more heavily in other priority areas, particularly central midfield, where reinforcements are also needed.

Perhaps most importantly, Bassey is unlikely to resist the opportunity to join one of England’s biggest clubs, while Fulham would be expected to consider a strong offer rather than block a transfer outright.

For a player who combines versatility, elite-level defending, Premier League experience and affordability, Bassey may be exactly the kind of signing Manchester United need.
