A young man named Abubakar Haruna from Potiskum, Yobe State, died in a road accident that occurred during a bride conveyance celebration.

The incident happened on Friday and has raised concerns about reckless behavior by youths at social events in the community. A group of young men escorting a bride were riding motorcycles in a dangerous and aggressive manner through a busy part of the town.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an eyewitness described the riders as moving at high speed, performing risky manoeuvres, and showing little regard for pedestrians or other road users.

The report added that Abubakar’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, confirmed the incident, saying the situation quickly turned tragic as the convoy approached a crowded section.

Haruna explained that he was standing by the roadside when one of the riders struck him violently on the head. He said the impact caused Abubakar to lose balance before falling into a nearby drainage channel.

He stated that before anyone could help him, Abubakar had already died from the injuries sustained.

“Abubakar Haruna’s death is heartbreaking, sudden, and entirely preventable,” he said.

The brother added that the incident was not only painful for the family but also “something that should never have happened.”

Haruna said reckless riding during bride conveyance celebrations has become common among youths in the area, adding that every celebration now includes dangerous motorcycle displays that put innocent people at risk.

He called on authorities in Yobe State to introduce stronger safety regulations and enforce existing traffic laws, stressing that if the government does not act now, more innocent lives may be lost through carelessness and indiscipline.
