Man dies in well while trying to retrieve phone in Kano

A 45‑year‑old man named Yusuf Usman died on Wednesday after falling into an abandoned well while attempting to retrieve a mobile phone that had slipped into the pit. The incident took place in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, where the well had been repurposed as a waste disposal site.

Alhaji Sani Anas, Director of the Kano State Fire Service, released a statement signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, to reporters in Kano on Wednesday. The statement confirmed that the event occurred in the morning.

“We received an emergency call from the Emergency Response Unit (Control Room) through one of our staff members, Kabiru Tata, at about 11:13 a.m. that a man had fallen into a well,” the statement read. “We immediately dispatched our rescue team to the scene.”

The statement added that Mr. Usman had entered the well to recover a phone that had fallen inside but was unable to climb out. The rescue team managed to pull him out while he was unconscious. He was later pronounced dead, the statement said, citing oxygen depletion and heat inside the well as the cause.

His body was handed over to the ward head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar. The director urged residents, especially parents and community leaders, to ensure that wells are properly covered to prevent similar tragedies.
