Makinde to declare presidential ambition, unveil PDP–APM alliance May 14

By Adeola Badru

Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to announce his presidential ambition on Thursday, 14 May, at a large political rally to be held in the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan.

The gathering, branded “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026”, is slated to serve as the formal launch of Makinde’s projected 2027 presidential campaign and to unveil a broad alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM). The alliance will also feature candidates supported by the Oyo State governor and his supporters.

Sources familiar with the matter told Vanguard on Tuesday that preparations for the rally have intensified as political realignments unfold in Oyo State and across the South‑West region.

Grassroots mobilisers, political associates and loyalists of Governor Makinde are reported to be making strategic moves while consultations on a wider political framework gain momentum.

Political analysts say the activities form part of a larger strategy to strengthen grassroots networks in Oyo State and beyond, while consolidating Makinde’s influence on the national stage.

According to insiders, discussions among stakeholders have accelerated in recent weeks after unresolved internal disputes within the PDP at the national level prompted several loyalists and political actors to explore alternative arrangements.

The 14 May rally is expected to draw political stakeholders, youth groups, community leaders, traditional supporters and allies from across the country, particularly those who align with Governor Makinde’s leadership style and political vision.

Although Governor Makinde has not yet issued a public statement confirming his intention to run for president in 2027, support groups and political associates continue to intensify calls for his participation.
