LAWMA demolishes illegal structures along the Lagos‑Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) announced that it has removed illegal structures and activities along the Alaba Rago setback on the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

In a statement released on Saturday, LAWMA Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin provided an update on the operations carried out along the Alaba Rago corridor.

He said the removal of unauthorised traders, squatters and makeshift structures demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s firm position against environmental abuse and improper waste disposal.

Gbadegesin explained that enforcement was required because of ongoing indiscriminate dumping, obstruction of sanitation work, and unlawful occupation of the highway setback by traders and squatters.

The exercise aims to restore order, improve sanitation compliance, and protect public infrastructure on one of the state’s busiest transport routes.

He emphasised that road setbacks are not meant for commercial activity, residence or any form of encroachment, warning that such practices will no longer be tolerated.

“The government will continue to enforce environmental laws and prevent activities that undermine structured waste management and environmental sustainability across Lagos State,” he said.

Gbadegesin urged traders and residents to use designated markets and approved waste‑disposal systems in the state.

He added that environmental responsibility and adherence to regulations are essential for achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

The LAWMA chief explained that the enforcement operation was carried out jointly with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

He noted that the operation followed the expiration of a three‑day notice issued to occupants of the affected area, requiring them to vacate or comply with sanitation regulations.

During the operation, several carts used by illegal waste handlers and cart pushers were confiscated as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping and strengthen organised waste‑management practices in the area.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to ongoing collaboration with relevant agencies to maintain environmental order and reinforce sanitation enforcement across the state.
