The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have started investigations into a gas pipeline fire that occurred on Agege Motor Road in Lagos.
Emergency responders contained the blaze after receiving distress calls through the state’s emergency hotlines.
LASEMA activated a full emergency response operation and its Eagle Response Team arrived at the Ile Zik area in Agege at about 3:13 a.m. There, officials found an NNPCL gas pipeline on fire.
Authorities say the exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
Investigators from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are working with NNPCL safety personnel to identify the source of the pipeline fire.
LASEMA confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported, crediting the rapid intervention of emergency responders who evacuated residents and secured the area.
Containment measures were immediately implemented to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings, filling stations and other sensitive infrastructure.
Traffic management officials diverted motorists from the affected corridor to reduce congestion and ensure public safety.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke‑Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, assured residents that the situation was under control and that the state government was working with NNPCL to isolate the affected pipeline safely.
He added that a comprehensive integrity assessment would be carried out on the facility before operations resume.
"The protection of lives and property remains our top priority," Oke‑Osanyintolu said, noting that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has continued to strengthen emergency response infrastructure across the state.
Residents and motorists were advised to avoid the Agege Motor Road axis and use alternative routes such as Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos‑Abeokuta Expressway.
Authorities urged the public not to panic‑buy petroleum products, stressing that the incident posed no immediate threat to the state’s fuel supply.
Residents were also encouraged to report suspicious activities or cases of pipeline vandalism through the state emergency numbers 767 and 112.
LASEMA said a detailed post‑incident report would be released after investigations are complete.
