Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced that the 226 beggars detained in a statewide enforcement operation on Thursday will be sent back to their home states.

Operatives from the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force, working with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, seized the individuals during a coordinated operation that spanned multiple areas of the state.

After the operation, Wahab said the raid was part of the state government’s continuous environmental clean‑up and enforcement campaign, intended to improve public safety and preserve environmental order.

He noted that the exercise focused on street begging, which he said contributes to environmental pollution and is a public nuisance.

“In continuation of the ongoing daily clean-up and enforcement exercise across Lagos State, a total of 226 beggars were apprehended today,” the commissioner stated.

He added that the operation was carried out jointly by the two agencies and that the detainees would first be profiled and documented before being transferred to their home states.

Wahab reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to continue enforcement and environmental sanitation activities throughout the state.

He said the initiative was part of wider efforts to create a cleaner, safer, and more orderly environment for residents and visitors.
