Lagos records lowest building collapse rate in 20 years

In 2025, Lagos State reported the lowest number of building collapses in the past twenty years.

Officials said the decline was due to stronger regulatory enforcement and cooperation among stakeholders.

Mrs. Olayinka Abdul, General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL), announced the findings on Thursday at a sensitisation session with market leaders at the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat.

She was accompanied by Mrs. Abimbola Adenote, Director of Business Development for the agency.

The session focused on the implementation of Lagos’s Certified Structural Integrity Programme (CSIP).

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), CSIP will require structural integrity testing every five years for all buildings in the state to guarantee safety and habitability.

Abdul attributed the improvement to heightened regulatory oversight, proactive inspections, and greater compliance with building standards.

She noted that Nigeria experienced more than 180 building collapses between 2005 and 2022, with Lagos responsible for over 60 percent of those incidents.

She added that recent government interventions have begun to reverse this trend.

“The progress demonstrates that when political will, technical expertise and public interest align, meaningful change is possible,” she said.

Abdul said the government had bolstered building control by reviewing and enforcing regulations, improving monitoring by relevant agencies, and tightening compliance measures.

She disclosed that the government had sealed 827 construction sites for failing to meet destructive and non‑destructive testing requirements.

She said LSMTL had implemented additional quality‑assurance measures, such as mandatory signing and sealing of laboratory data and intensified audit processes.

Abdul added that the agency introduced laboratory comparison exercises and incorporated weather information into non‑destructive testing reports.

She said the reforms aim to enhance the credibility, accuracy, and reliability of construction‑materials testing in Lagos.

The general manager urged all stakeholders to support the state government’s efforts to prevent structural failures and protect lives and property.
