The Labour Party has established an eight‑member committee to screen candidates for a range of elective positions in the 2027 general elections.
The announcement, signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma, was released to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
According to the notice, the committee was created under Articles 20(1B)(d), 20(2)(d) and 27 of the party’s constitution, as well as the electoral guidelines that govern the 2026 primaries.
Usman has been appointed Chairman of the screening committee. Its members are Mrs Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke and Dr Olu Ayewo, while Obioma will serve as Secretary.
The committee’s primary responsibility is to screen candidates applying for nomination primaries for the presidential, governorship and National Assembly seats, and to recommend those who meet the required standards.
Its terms of reference also require the committee to evaluate aspirants in accordance with the party’s constitution, the 2026 electoral guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026.
The notice further states that the committee must follow guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
Additionally, the screening committee will verify the authenticity and completeness of documents submitted by aspirants and ensure that all statutory and party eligibility criteria are satisfied.
