The Labour Party has established a National Screening Committee to manage the vetting of candidates ahead of its 2027 general election primaries.

The announcement, released in Abuja on Friday, references Articles 20(1B)(d), 20(2)(d), and 27 of the party constitution, as well as the Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primaries.

Senator Nenadi Esther Usman will chair the committee. Other members are Mrs Oluchi Oparah, Comrade Mohammad Salisu, Pastor Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, Dr OluAyewoh, and Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, who will act as secretary.

The committee’s mandate is to screen aspirants for the party’s presidential, governorship, and National Assembly tickets. Its terms of reference include adherence to the Labour Party constitution, the 2026 Electoral Guidelines, the Electoral Act 2026, INEC regulations, and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

It will also verify the authenticity and completeness of applicants’ documents, ensure compliance with statutory and party eligibility criteria, and recommend qualified candidates for the primaries.

The panel must submit its report within the timeframe set in the party’s activity schedule and may be assigned additional duties by the national leadership.

The party has called on committee members to perform their duties with integrity and in the best interests of the party as preparations for 2027 intensify.

The statement was signed jointly by national chairman Nenadi Esther Usman and national secretary Hon. Iheanacho Obioma.

According to the party’s timetable for the 2027 general elections, the submission of completed nomination forms and the screening process will begin on Monday, May 18.
