KWASU confirms N2.14bn NELFund loan disbursement for 11,434 students

Kwara State University (KWASU) Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Jimoh Shaykh‑Luqman confirmed that the institution has received N2,135,857,150 from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) to support 11,434 students.

Shaykh‑Luqman made the announcement on Tuesday during an interactive session with journalists in his office. He said the money arrived under the Federal Government‑backed student loan scheme, which aims to broaden access to tertiary education across Nigeria.

The university had previously acknowledged receipt of the funds in a letter dated 21 April, addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFund. The letter, released to the press, stated that the university had received the payment on 17 April as disbursement for loans approved for eligible students.

According to the Vice‑Chancellor, the disbursement will cover tuition fees for the 11,434 KWASU students who have successfully accessed the NELFund programme. He described the intervention as a significant milestone in higher‑education financing and a major relief for thousands of students and their families.

“Many students face financial challenges that threaten their academic progress,” Shaykh‑Luqman said. “This scheme will help reduce those pressures and strengthen access to tertiary education, ensuring that deserving students are not denied opportunities because of financial constraints.”

He praised the Federal Government and NELFund for the smooth processing and timely release of the funds, noting that the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting students and promoting inclusive access to higher education.

“On behalf of the university, I sincerely thank the Federal Government and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for the timely processing and disbursement of the funds in support of education,” he added.

The Vice‑Chancellor also stated that KWASU will continue to support initiatives that expand educational opportunities and improve student welfare.

The NELFund scheme was launched by the Federal Government to provide financial assistance to eligible students in tertiary institutions nationwide. Education stakeholders view the programme as a strategic intervention that should increase enrolment, reduce drop‑out rates, and improve access to quality higher education.

KWASU’s latest disbursement represents one of the largest tuition‑support interventions the institution has received under the student loan programme.
