Killing of MACBAN Chairman Undermines Peace Efforts in Benue – IPCR

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has expressed strong condemnation over the killing of Ardo Risku Mohammed, the former Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) Benue State Chapter. The Institute described the incident as a significant setback to the ongoing peacebuilding initiatives in the state.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its Director‑General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the IPCR highlighted that Mohammed was widely recognized for his commitment to dialogue, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among Benue’s diverse communities.

According to the Institute, Mohammed’s work to deepen understanding and nurture cordial relations among various ethnic and religious groups earned him broad respect throughout the state.

The IPCR noted that his death represents not only a painful loss for his family and the MACBAN community but also a major blow to efforts aimed at establishing lasting peace in Benue.

“The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution strongly condemns the tragic killing of the Chairman of MACBAN, Benue State Chapter, Ardo Risku Mohammed, describing the incident as a grievous attack on peace and efforts to foster harmonious coexistence in the state,” the statement read.

It added that those who dedicate themselves to peacebuilding and community bridging must be protected, warning that attacks on peace advocates can undermine the pursuit of enduring stability.

The IPCR also praised security agencies for reportedly arresting about ten suspects linked to the killing, calling the development a positive step toward accountability.

The Institute urged security forces to carry out a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation, ensuring that anyone found guilty is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It emphasized that accountability and the proper administration of justice are essential for strengthening public confidence and reinforcing the foundations of peace and security.

The IPCR further appealed to community leaders, youth groups, religious leaders and civil society organisations to maintain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, the Institute pledged to continue supporting dialogue, mediation and confidence‑building initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence and social cohesion across the country.

It also extended condolences to Mohammed’s family, the leadership and members of MACBAN, the people of Benue State and all those affected by the incident, while urging Nigerians to remain steadfast in their pursuit of peace, justice and national unity.
